JNU PhD Admission 2026-27 — Dates, Eligibility, Selection and How to Apply
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi has released applications for admission to PhD programmes for the academic session 2026-27 through UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, JRF and GATE categories. Eligible candidates can apply online from 6 October 2026 to 16 October 2026 (up to 11:50 PM) through the official admission portal at jnuee.jnu.ac.in. The JNU PhD admission 2026-27 last date is therefore 16 October 2026, and the form has to be completed and submitted online before 11:50 PM on that day.
Candidates who are looking for the JNU PhD application form 2026-27 should begin at the official admission portal, jnuee.jnu.ac.in, and open the PhD Admission 2026-27 portal. The form asks for the admission category first, because the JNU PhD NET JRF GATE admission routes work differently: the NET, JRF and GATE categories decide how a candidate is shortlisted and how the merit is calculated. Applying under more than one category needs a separate application form per category, so candidates who are eligible under two categories should fill a separate form for each one.
For JNU PhD admission 2026-27 eligibility, a Master’s degree with at least 55% marks is required, with 50% for SC / ST / PwBD candidates. Along with the degree, a valid UGC-NET / CSIR-NET / JRF or GATE scorecard is needed, as applicable to the chosen programme. The GATE route is for specified engineering disciplines only, in the School of Engineering. Candidates may choose up to three fields of study in order of preference, and the preference order is treated as final, so the three choices should be ordered with care before the form is submitted.
A question many applicants ask is how JNU PhD admission without NET works. The answer in this admission is that admission happens only through the UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, JRF or GATE categories, and a valid scorecard is required. Selection begins with shortlisting on the applicable entrance score, followed by viva-voce at the concerned School / Centre. The composite merit follows the official e-Prospectus: NET percentile carries 70% weightage and viva-voce 30%; GATE score carries 70% and viva-voce 30%. In the JRF category, selection is on viva-voce alone, with 100% weightage. This is why the JNU PhD viva-voce weightage matters as much as the entrance score: for JRF candidates it decides everything, and for NET and GATE candidates it decides nearly a third of the merit.
After the JNU PhD admission 2026-27 last date, the schedule moves quickly. The form correction window is 17-18 October 2026, so any mistake found after submission can be corrected in those two days. Viva-voce invitations are to be sent by 22 October 2026 (Tentative), and the viva-voce examination is scheduled for 26-30 October 2026 (Tentative). The 1st merit list is expected on 9 November 2026 (Tentative). Candidates tracking the JNU PhD merit list 2026 should therefore watch the admission portal after the viva-voce round, because the merit list link in this post points to the same portal. After the 1st list, pre-enrolment, fee payment and seat blocking run from 9-11 November 2026 (Tentative), and physical verification for the 1st list is scheduled for 16-18 November 2026.
On the JNU PhD application fee, the position is simple: the application-fee amount is shown on the admission portal at apply time, and the fee is paid online. The e-Prospectus (Section XVI) lists course / semester fees, not the application fee, so no application-fee amount is stated here; candidates should check the exact amount on the portal while filling the form. On the JNU PhD age limit, the e-Prospectus does not state a general age limit for PhD admission, and admission follows JNU admission rules. Before applying, candidates should read the JNU PhD e-prospectus 2026-27, whose official PDF is linked in this post: it carries the programme-wise list across the 21 Schools and Special Centres, along with seats and the NET-subject mapping. The application itself follows six steps: visit jnuee.jnu.ac.in, open the PhD Admission 2026-27 portal and choose the category, register with a valid email ID and mobile number, fill academic and personal details and upload documents, pay the application fee online, and submit the form and take a printout for future reference.
